Since 2004 I have been guiding fly trips in the Southport/Bald Head areas. A lot of things have changed in 20 years of guiding but catching a fish in our area on a fly is an accomplishment period! As a fly fisherman we all know that fishless days are a possibility. Inshore -redfish are the primary target however flounder will also eat a fly as well as speckled trout.
Near shore offers great opportunity for beginning fly fishers. Bluefish, Spanish Mackerel and the occasional false abacore offer great targets that are fun and are exciting to catch.
My favorite target is redfish in the grass- flood tide redfishing. This is more of a hunt than a fishing expedition. It is true sightfishing! The flood tides in latter summer months and early fall months are the best for having shots at fish. This flood tide phenomenon only last for a short period but when it all comes together it is magical . If your interested let me know when you will be in area and we will check the tides and see if this is a possibility.
Area has world class flounder fishery on fly in August/September before keeper season opens up .
Bluefish can provide great action just off the beach of Bald Head Island and Oak Island
